Preliminary Gemini 4 Crew Debriefing, Part I, 1965

NASAIncident: June 9, 1965North Atlantic Ocean38 MB

When a Gemini capsule came down at sea, the debriefing began almost immediately, on the recovery ship. This file is the first part of a preliminary transcript of those shipboard sessions with James McDivitt and Ed White after their four-day Gemini 4 flight, recorded aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp.

White’s “sparkles”

The part NASA flags is Ed White describing “sparkles” he saw during the flight. White was the astronaut who made the first American spacewalk on this mission. The description gives no more detail — not when he saw the sparkles, how many, or whether he offered an explanation — and readers will need the document itself for that.

Where the detail is

This Part I is a general debriefing, and its contents go well beyond sightings. The organized discussion of what the astronauts saw is in Part II, which carries the debriefing’s “Visual Sightings” section, and the crew returned to bright particles two years later in an experiment debriefing. On the Mercury flights, NASA traced similar bright specks to frozen condensation (see Gordon Cooper’s “fireflies”).

The official description

From war.gov/UFO, released June 12, 2026, quoted in full

This document is a preliminary transcript (Part I) derived from voice recordings of the Gemini 4 flight crew debriefing taken aboard the recovery ship, USS Wasp, on June 9, 1965. Astronaut Ed White recounts seeing “sparkles” during the flight.

The summary above is our own; the official description is the government’s, from war.gov/UFO. The Pentagon calls these unresolved cases — publishing a file does not mean it shows anything anomalous.
