This is the sound recording behind a well-known astronaut sighting. On December 5, 1965, during the Gemini 7 flight, commander Frank Borman radioed mission control in Houston that he could see an unidentified object, which he called a “bogey.” The excerpt runs a little over six minutes and blends two sources: the air-to-ground radio loop and NASA’s public affairs feed, the running commentary that went out to the press and public.

What you hear

Borman makes the first report, and Lovell, the only other person aboard, adds remarks of his own. The companion transcript sets out the words in full: Borman also described a field of many small particles, and Lovell a brilliant body in sunlight against black space. In pilot slang of the period, a “bogey” was simply an unidentified aircraft or radar contact, so the word itself is not a claim about what the object was.

Hearing the exchange, rather than reading it, conveys its tone in a way the transcript cannot.

Context

Gemini was NASA’s two-person program between Mercury and Apollo, and Gemini 7 was a long-duration flight. Judging objects in orbit is hard: with no background for scale, size and distance are difficult to estimate by eye. The crew talked about lights, flashes and other sightings again at their technical debriefing later that month. The audio itself does not settle what Borman saw, and NASA’s release adds no conclusion.

The official description

From war.gov/UFO, released May 8, 2026, quoted in full

This audio recording contains air to ground communications and the NASA Public Affairs audio feed with commentary, recorded during the flight of the Gemini 7 mission. In this excerpted segment of audio, Astronaut Frank Borman reports to NASA mission control in Houston his sighting of an unidentified object, which he referred to as a "bogey." This sighting occurred on December 5, 1965. The dialogue includes Borman's initial report, as well as additional comments by Astronaut Jim Lovell, Borman's fellow crew member.

The summary above is our own; the official description is the government’s, from war.gov/UFO. The Pentagon calls these unresolved cases — publishing a file does not mean it shows anything anomalous.
