This is a little under four minutes of audio from Sigma 7, Wally Schirra’s six-orbit Mercury flight on October 3, 1962. By then the white specks first reported by John Glenn had become a known feature of orbital flight, and Schirra describes them with an engineer’s eye. He also mentions a second, unrelated event that he could not account for.

The particles and the flash

Schirra says the small white objects seem to originate from the capsule itself before drifting away, and he later calls them “particles” and “lathe shavings” — the curled metal slivers thrown off when metal is turned on a lathe.

Separately, he reports a sudden flash of light at the window whose source he cannot pin down. Rather than leave it there, he offers his own explanation: that it coincided with the Sun dropping below the horizon at orbital sunset.

How it fits the Mercury record

Schirra’s account is closer to an explanation than a mystery. He places the specks at the capsule and ties the flash to sunset. The release records no further investigation. Compare Scott Carpenter’s “snowflakes” from the previous flight, and the debriefing papers in which NASA scientists questioned Glenn and Schirra about these luminous particles.

The official description

From war.gov/UFO, released May 22, 2026, quoted in full

During the Mercury Atlas 8 mission, Sigma 7 pilot Walter M. “Wally” Schirra Jr. describes observing “little white objects that tend to come from the capsule itself and drift off.” Schirra later also refers to those objects as “particles” and “lathe shavings.” Schirra also describes seeing a burst of light in the window, whose source he cannot identify. He speculates that his observation corresponds with the moment the sun passes below the horizon during sunset.

The summary above is our own; the official description is the government’s, from war.gov/UFO. The Pentagon calls these unresolved cases — publishing a file does not mean it shows anything anomalous.
