PENTAGON UFO FILE · DOCUMENT · NASA-UAP-D022Gemini 9 Debriefing, 1966
This is a transcript of the debriefing NASA held with Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan less than two weeks after their Gemini IX-A mission launched. The flight had a troubled start — it was renamed after its original target vehicle was lost — and it was busy, with a spacewalk and a run of scientific and medical experiments. The pages of interest to PURSUE are a short stretch near the front, pages 2 to 5.
What the crew reported
Stafford and Cernan describe “flashing lights” and “sparkles” they saw during the mission. The release does not specify whether these were outside the spacecraft or, like the flashes later Apollo crews reported with their eyes closed, seen in the dark of the cabin, and it offers no explanation. Readers will need the transcript pages themselves to tell which.
Cernan’s later Moon flight
The file has added interest because of who is speaking. Cernan flew twice more after this mission and commanded the last crewed lunar landing. On that flight he again described flashes and streaks, including one he likened to a train headlight, and a distant flashing object he insisted was physical — accounts preserved in the voice transcript from that mission. Reading this debriefing alongside it gives a sense of how one astronaut described similar sights years apart. For other Gemini crews’ comparable reports, see the Gemini 5 debriefing and Ed White’s “sparkles”.
